Relieving Pain and Restoring Movement: How Dr. Stephen Howell Helps Patients Stay Active at NABJC

What Is Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation?

At North Alabama Bone & Joint Clinic, our mission is to help patients move better, feel stronger,
and live with less pain. Stephen Howell, DO, specializes in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
(PM&R)—a field focused on improving function and mobility through personalized, non
surgical care.

“Physical medicine and rehabilitation is about helping people improve their function and
mobility,” Dr. Howell says, “so they can get back to doing the things they enjoy.”

A Whole-Body, Team-Based Approach

Dr. Howell treats a wide variety of conditions, including joint pain, muscle weakness, back issues, and nerve-related injuries. His care often overlaps with physical therapy, guided injections, and coordination with orthopedic surgeons to support recovery.

“We work as a team at NABJC to make sure each patient has the right combination of care,” he explains. “Sometimes that means rehab, sometimes surgery, and often both.”

Everyday Tips for Joint and Muscle Health

When it comes to preventing injury and staying active, Dr. Howell shares that consistency is key.

“Maintaining good posture, building core strength, and staying mobile each day can make a big difference,” he says. He recommends low-impact movement like walking or swimming and being mindful of overuse or poor mechanics that can lead to long-term pain.

Here are a few simple ways Dr. Howell recommends protecting your joints and muscles:

  • Stretch daily, especially in the morning or after long periods of sitting.
  • Use proper form when lifting, bending, or reaching to avoid strain.
  • Incorporate light strength training to support your joints and reduce stress on bones.
  • Wear supportive footwear that fits properly and provides stability.
  • Listen to your body-rest when you need it, and don’t push through sharp or persistent
    pain.

“Small consistent changes can really add up over time,” Dr. Howell adds. “The goal is to keep your body moving safely and confidently.”

Personalized Treatment for Every Patient

At NABJC, Dr. Howell develops care plans that are tailored to the individual—not just the injury. He uses techniques like physical therapy, image-guided injections, and activity modification to improve outcomes and support overall function.

“Our job is to help patients regain confidence in how they function and manage their medical issues,” Dr. Howell shares. “And we work closely with our surgeons to make sure they have all the right tools for recovery.”
